Lava is a small hamlet town about 33km away from Kalimpong and is surrounded by pine forests and is often engulfed in mists and clouds. It is situated at an altitude of 2,350 meters. The village hosts a beautiful monastery of Bhutanese origin and a Nature Interpretation Centre. This place is popular amongst nature explorers and is renowned for bird watching. It is also the starting point for treks into the Neora Valley National Park, which abounds with floral and faunal wealth.

The route to Lava is scenic with the change in vegetation from tropical deciduous to the wet alpine trees of fir, pine and birch. The lush forests of Lava are ideal for nature treks, bird watching, and plant and wildlife exploration. The Sherpa View Point here provides an excellent view of the snow-crested mountains of Bhutan and Tibet.

By Air: The nearest airport is Bagdogra airport in Siliguri. almost 50 km away from Kalimpong that will take around 2 hours. to reach.

By Train: The nearest railhead is New Jalpaiguri. The rail distance between Kolkata and Siliguri via New Jalpaiguri is 574 km. Both these places are well-connected by rail as several trains ply on this route.

By Road: Distance between Kolkata to Kalimpong is 623 km by Road. From Kolkata via NH12 (North Dinajpur-Kolkata Highway) by Car you can reach at Kalimpong town within 15 hours.

A small peaceful hamlet in the Kalimpong District, Lolegaon is nature's paradise on its own with beautiful landscape, comprising lush green forest and serene valleys. The peaks of Kanchenjunga rise majestically in the morning mist. Lolegaon is a one hour journey from Kalimpong and Lava through the serpentine forest road. Lolegaon offers small treks and trails. An Ideal destination for unwinding and relaxation. Lolegaon is a beautiful Lepcha village of scenic spledour. It is situated in an extreme end of a Himalayan Ridge and located at a distance of 24 km from Lava lying at an altitude of 1,675 mtrs. It comes under the Kalimpong I block in the Darjeeling District of West Bengal. Lolegaon can be reached from Siliguri with a 4 hour drive covering 124 km via Kalimpong and Lava. Kalimpong, the nearest town is 55 km from Lolegaon. Lolegaon is locally known as Kaffer. Lolegaon stands along a lovely forest drive. It has a heritage forest and an observation point called Jhandi Dara, for viewing the snow peaks of the Singalila Range. According to some, it offers an even better view of the sunrise than Tiger Hill.

Canopy Walk is located around a kilometre from the bus stand at Loleygaon, in the middle of the forest full of fir, oak, birch and cypress are inter-connected foot bridges. With a total length of 180 meters, the hanging bridges from one tree to another help the visitors to view the beauty of the forest from a height. These bridges keep on swinging continuously.

The famous Neora National Park is located in Kalimpong was established in the year 1986. Considered as one of the wealthiest biological zones, this park spreads over a region of about 88 Sq. km. and is situated near Lava at a dense forest in the foothill of majestic Himalayan Mountains. This park is bordered by the forests of Sikkim region on one side and by Bhutan on the other. The flora and fauna of this park makes it more beautiful. Natural forests which contain different varieties of trees enrich this place. Large numbers of orchids as well as bamboo groves remain as the special feature of the Neora National Park. Wildlife enthusiasts can enjoy visiting this place as it houses different varieties of animals and birds. Tourists can easily sight the golden headed black finch, blind snake and king cobra in their natural habitat. This valley is also considered as a marvellous picnic spot where children and adults can enjoy themselves.

The popular tourist destination Lava (which is about 105 km from NJP and 34 km from Kalimpong) is located quite close to Neora Valley National Park. The entrance to the park at a village named Kolakham is about 10 km from Lava. It takes over 1 hour to reach Lava from Kalimpong and over 3 hours from NJP (via Kalimpong). From Lava the distance of 10 km to Neora Valley would easily take another 1 hour because of the bad road condition. A jeep type vehicle is available to negotiate this approach road to Neora.

kolakham

A relatively new destination, this is the hill station just across the hill from Rishop. The aerial distance could hardly be 3 km but the road from Rishop to Kolakham travel through Lava and the total distance is about 21 km. The village is adjacent to Neora Valley National Park and the famous Changey falls is about 5 km further from Kolakham. From Kolakham the lush valley and the rolling hills stretch north as far as the eyes can see. In the west, they end at the foot of the Kanchenjunga. In clear weather, the snowy peaks of Kabru, Kabrudome, Kanchenjunga and Pandim stand out against the streched sky. Enthusiasts can go for a walk on the jungle trail. The chance of coming across wildlife is quite high here. A trek of 5 km will take to the beautiful Changey falls.

Board New Jalpaiguri bound train and get off at the NJP junction then hire car from there to arrive at Kolakham which will take 123 km around 5 hours to reach. The car can also follow the Gorubathan route which takes 117 km marginally less than that of Siliguri. Bagdogra is the closest airport from which you can rent cars.

Lava Monastery, also known as Ratnarishi Bihar Buddhist Gumpa, is situated at Lava in Darjeeling District of West Bengal. This monastery was established by Karma Lodro Chokyi Senge, the third Kongtrul Rimpoche. Situated beside the large Neora Reservoir Lake, this religious residence is erected using brick and concrete. Due to the increase in the number of devotees and monks over the years, the facilities in Lava monastery were expanded. Today, the fourth Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche studies and trains here.

Nature Interpretation Centre is a museum located on Rishi Road in Lava, West Bengal, about 1 km from the Lava Jeep Stand. It is one of the best spots to experience Lava Tourism because it is located at the entrance to the Neora Valley National Park. Nature Interpretation Center is a lovely spot for nature lovers where they may acquire detailed information about the flora & fauna of the Neora Valley and Lava region, which is maintained by the forest department. The museum is well-known for its dioramas, which include models, pictures, and stuffed birds and animals. There are also orchids and other flowers on show. Timings: 8 AM - 12 PM & 1 PM - 4 PM, Closed on Thursdays.

Located at a distance of 10 km from Lava, Changey Falls is a mesmerizing waterfall situated in Kalimpong district of West Bengal. It is one of the gorgeous waterfalls of this region and falls among the best places to visit in Lava. It is a beautiful tiny waterfall amidst the hills and forests, cascading down from a height of about 150 feet with crystal clear water and thick green forest. One can experience the innumerous chirps of amazing Himalayan birds like White Capped Water Redstart, Verditer Flycatcher, Niltava, Blue Fronted Redstart, Grey Treepie, Indian Robin, Blue Whistling Thrush that makes the atmosphere heaven like. To reach the destination, one needs to book a cab as there are no such buses to reach there. A drive of 1 hour from Lava will take you to Changey Falls and if you are a trek lover then, one can trek 900 m from the last motorable point in order to reach the falls. Timings: 6 AM - 5 PM.

It has breathtaking views of the snowy mountains, superb sunrise and sunset, picture post card hamlets, exotic flora, forests, mountain streams and river-pools, all far from the maddening crowd. Lava also attracts many trekkers. Trekking to Samthar Plateau starts from a place called Gompa Dara which is located close to Lava. The forested areas around Lava are also a paradise for bird watchers. You can see many different birds like Blue Robins, Fulvetta, Finch, Wren Babblers and lot more.

Guests can achieve Samthar town from NJP rail route station or Bagdogra air terminal through Kalijhora and Pongbu in around 2 and a half hours. On the off chance if visitors are going to Samthar from Lava, then vehicle will go around 24 km en route to Loleygaon to land at Samthar.

Rachela Pass is a trekking route 12 km from Lava through the Neora Valley Nature Reserve which is entered through Lava. The route however difficult and steep it is, also offers scenic beauty of magnolias, rhododendrons and bamboo trees. It takes about 3-4 hours to arrive at Rachela Pass through the steep road. The scenic beauty along the route is mesmerising. Rachela Pass is virtually considered as a junction between Sikkim, Bhutan and Bengal. Rachela Pass is the trade route between India (Sikkim) and Bhutan located at an elevation of 3152 meters. This scenic beauty of a pass is often visited tourist attraction and experiences footfall round the year. Especially tourists loving adventure visit this pass . One of the most significant trade routes in the history of India, one could witness mules carrying merchandise within countries. The tracks are still noticeable. You can also spot the 4 chief ridges dividing the valleys known as Neora, Rishi, Rangli and Jaldhaka. From Rachela Pass, other passes of Jelep La and Nathu La are visible. Also visible are the Singalila Range with its proud peak Kanchenjunga, worlds 3rd highest and also the entire Chola Range.

Welcome to Pedong, The latest destination in the evergreen and mystical hills of the North East. This is a place with a very beautiful blend of History, culture and nature wherein a traveler can have a true genuine experience. Situated at an altitude of 5000ft, the altitudinal variation ranges from the sub tropical at the Rishi Valley to Alpine at the Da msang ridge. The terrain is easily negotiable and provides some of the most breath taking views of the landscape including the Omni present Kanchenjunga in the back drop. Here one can take part in adventure activity such as rock climbing, mountain biking and archery. Tourists may drive further downhill to the Bengal Sikkim border at Rishi and spend some time besides Rishikhola, a small stream that acts as a boundary between Bengal and Sikkim.

Pedong is a picturesque hamlet surrounded by pine forests. Pedong commands magnificent views of the snow ranges of Mount Kanchenjunga. It falls on the ancient Silk Route that connected Tibet with India through the Jelep La Pass. Several short and thrilling treks originate from Pedong leading to the Damsangdugi Fort, a historically important site that witnessed a long ethnic war between the Lepchas and Bhutias. A 300 year old ruin hidden by dense forest at Damsangudi still holds memories of the reigns of the Lepcha kindom.
