Mirik is a picturesque tourist spot nestled in the serene hills of Darjeeling district in West Bengal, India. Mirik is 1767 meters above sea level and has a pleasant weather throughout the year. It has become a popular tourist destination due to its pleasant climate, natural beauty, and easy accessibility. Sumendu Lake is the centerstage of attraction of Mirik, which is surrounded by a garden on one side and pine trees on the other side with an arching footbridge called Indreni Pull linking both the sides.

A 3.5-km-long road encircles the lake and is used for walks by tourist with the view of Kanchenjunga on the far horizon. Tourists can enjoy boating on the quaint shikaras along with pony riding on the lake peripherals. Apart from the lake, Mirik has several sightseeing and tourist places such as viewpoints with mesmerizing views of the sunrise, sunset and landscape, several tea gardens, monasteries and temples, orange orchards, flower gardens including orchids etc. The place is only 49 km from Darjeeling and 52km from Bagdogra and can be reached quite easily from either place.

By Air: The nearest airport to Mirik is Bagdogra. From here tourists can hire a cab or take a bus to reach to Mirik

By Train: The nearest rail-head to Mirik is New Jalpaiguri. It is well connected to major cities around India.

By Road: Take a bus or hire a taxi from Darjeeling, Kurseong or Siliguri to get to Mirik.

There are eight tea gardens in Mirik area. Thurbo T.E., one of the best tea estates, is only 2 Kms from the lake. The factory may be visited with the permission of the manager.

Mirik lake is the central attraction of Mirik and this is where you are likely to spend most of your time. Mirik Lake is popularly known as the Samendu Lake. The lake is around 1.25 km long and is surrounded by chestnut, oak and maple trees. Boating and horse riding can be enjoyed here. The lake is at the lowest altitude in Mirik. Far ahead towards north you can see the mountains, and on a clear day you can even get nice views of the Kanchenjunga snow peaks. There is a lovely 80-ft long arch footbridge across the center of the lake which joins the eastern bank with the western bank.

Lots of tourists engage in fish feeding just outside the southern end of the lake. There is a bridge that connects the lake area with Krishnanagar (southern part of Mirik). The bridge is two minutes walk from the lake. When you stand over the bridge and look down below into the waters, you can see numerous fishes there. Tourists and locals throw breads into the water and you can see hundreds of fishes swiftly converging.

Another popular activity here is horse riding which is a favorite amongst children. You will get the horses mostly at the western bank when you cross over the arched footbridge. Although it is quite common to see horses moving along the footbridge. They have defined circuits. Some short and the others longer around the lake.

It is ideal to take this walk early in the morning and your chances of seeing the snow peaks of Kanchenjunga will be much better. You can reach the trail at the western bank by walking over the arched footbridge. The trail passes through dense cryptomeria forest, locally known as Dhupi forest. You can alternatively take the trail on eastern bank which goes all the way up to Mirik Bazar at the backdrop of pine trees.

Ramitey Dara is a hill that offers beautiful views of the snow covered mountains and the plains of Mirik. The Kawlay Dara View Point and the Bokar Ngedon Chokhor Ling Monastery are located in the vicinity.

The Bokar Ngedon Chokhor Ling Monastery is one of the prominent Buddhist centres in the region. The monastery is home to around 500 monks who participate in practising and sustaining the teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha. It also serves as a school teaching the principles of Buddhism. The monastery has a monastic college named Shedra. Kyabje Bokar Rinpoche established the monastery in 1984 as a retreat centre. On the request of disciples and natives, Rinpoche began accepting monks for training and the centre was transformed into a monastery. The activities of the monastery are under the control of Kyabje Bokar Khenchen Donyo Rinpoche.

Deosi Dara, at a height of around 1,768 m above sea level, provides beautiful views of the adjoining plains, hills and peaks in and around Mirik.

The Tingling View Point is another great spot to get those wonderful pictures of the snowcapped hills that are the sentinels of Darjeeling and Mirik. The sprawling tea plantations form a stark contrast to the white snow and blue sky. A panaromic view of the tea gardens can been seen from here. If viewing Mirik from a tried and tested angle to admire Nature in general, this could be the place tourists might get extremely interested. This is best vantage point to get a complete view of the estate on the rolling hills. There are more wonderful surprises just in the outskirts of Mirik. If you go 8 kms down from Mirik along the main road, you will reach Tingling View point. This is the place from where you get best views of tea gardens in the whole of Darjeeling district. What you see all around is wonderful views of rolling tea gardens on mountain slopes with mists and sun playing the game of lights.

Lepchajagat, basically a Lepcha village, is situated at Sukhipokhri near Darjeeling on the Ghoom-Mirik road. This small village located in wilderness at an altitude of 6,956 ft (i.e. 2123 meters) and only 19 km away from Darjeeling hill town. Located on hill slope covered with rhododendron and oaks, a forest bungalow only accommodation available in the area offers a magnificent view of Kanchenjunga snow ranges over the forested hills. It is an ideal place to explore the tranquility of unknown Darjeeling hills.
