Madan Mohan Bari

Madan Mohan Bari

Situated in the heart of the Cooch Behar town, this is the most important temple in this district. Maharaja Nripendra Narayan constructed Madan Mohan temple. The deities in the temple include Lord Madan Mohan, Ma Kali, Ma Tara and Ma Bhavani. The temple portrays a beautiful architecture in spotless white with well-maintained gardens on the compound. The temple along with the compound allows one to enjoy the royal ambience.

Cooch Behar Palace

Cooch Behar Palace

Designed to resemble the classical European style of the Italian Renaissance, this magnificent palace was built by the Koch king Maharaja Nripendra Narayan in 1887. Raised on a basement of 1.5 mts. in height, this double storied brick building covers an area of 4768 sq. mts. It extends 120 mts. from north to south and 90 mts. from east to west. The frontal facade consists of a series of arches resting by an alternate arrangement of narrow and broad piers to contain single and double Corinthian pilasters respectively. The Durbar Hall is dodecagonal in shape, resting on four arches supported by massive Corinthian pilasters and projecting a lantern at the top. The intrados of the dome is relieved in stepped patterns and flanked by a small, elegant balcony with twelve window openings at the base. In the center of the Durbar Hall, the marble floor contains the royal insignia in pietra dura. The building contains more than fifty rooms/halls of varied dimensions which include bedrooms, dressing rooms, billiard room, kitchen, dining hall, dancing hall, library, Toshakhana and the lady s gallery. Few of the rooms have beautiful paintings on the ceiling as well as on the walls.

Kamteswari Temple

This temple has been established by Maharaja Pran Narayan in 1665, when the original temple was destroyed. This ancient temple is an architectural marvel with beautifully painted murals on the walls.

Baneswar Siva temple

Baneswar Siva temple

Located 10 km towards the north of the town of Cooch Behar, the temple of Baneswar Siva has a Shivalinga that is 10 ft below the platform level. One needs to climb down a flight of stairs in order to view the Shivlinga. The temple complex houses a big pond which is habitat for Black softshell turtle, a critically endangered species. The turtle is known as Mohan locally and considered as sacred.

Gosanimari Rajpat

Gosanimari Rajpat

Gosanimari Rajpat has an important historical significance in the history of Cooch Behar. The site contains ruins of ancient city of Kamtapur, the capital of Kamata kingdom. Stone engravings and structures such as the water supply systems, wells can be found on the site. A walk around the park will surely take you back to the Kamtapur age.

Rasik Beel

Rasik Beel

Rasik Beel is a huge lake which is a very popular bird watching spot and is famous for the local and migratory birds that visits the lake. This lake is a sight to behold as it is surrounded by three dense forests Nagurhaat, Atasmochar, and Bochamari that boast of wild flora and fauna. The lake also features various popular varieties of fishes. In the heart of Rasik Beel are attractions such as a large aquarium, a crocodile rehabilitation center, and a deer park. Other must visit centers, such as a Python house, a Leopard house and a Tortoise house are present as well. Apart from all these, Rasik Beel is also known for bird watching activities as numerous local and migratory birds make their nests here during different times of the year.

Madhupur Dham Temple

The Madhupur Dham was built in the 16th century in honour of Shankaradeva when he made his last journey to Cooch Behar in 1489 on the request of Maharaja Nar Narayan to preach the sermons of neo-Vaishnava cult. This temple is highly significant for the followers of Acharya Shankaradeva.

Sagardighi is a tank in the heart of Coochbehar. Out of the 22 tanks around the town, Sagardighi is the most popular. The area has grand structures arrayed all around it. During winter, the tank attracts migratory birds thus making it a popular place for visit. This place is a popular hangout spot during the evenings.
